Embossed wax capsule, secure on top but broken to sides, reads John Somerville & Co, Leith. No label but believed to be their Rare Liqueur Whisky which the company produced during the period 1875 - 1897. Last seen at Christie's Nov 1995.

 

John Somerville & Co, Leith was founded in 1853. Wine shippers, whisky brokers and later whisky distillery owners (Glendronach and Dalwhinnie).

In 1897 John Somerville & Co merged with Blyth & Cameron, Brewers in Edinburgh to form the North British Brewery.
